Improving the energy performance of buildings

The European directive in force since 2012 provides a framework for improving the energy performance of new and existing buildings. Environmental requirements and the need to achieve energy savings have led the European Union to adapt the law to ensure better energy performance of buildings.

On an individual scale, companies can implement energy saving solutions and move towards an energy transition approach.

What is building energy performance  ?

Improving the energy performance of buildings consists on the one hand of improving the systems and equipment related to the energy consumption, and on the other hand of changing energy habits, i.e. the way energy is consumed in buildings.

On the equipment side, it is possible, for example, to base improvements on the heating and cooling systems, but also on the production of hot water.

Some guidelines to reduce the energy consumption of buildings?

To improve the energy efficiency of buildings, it is essential to reduce energy demand by adapting uses, increase the energy efficiency of building facilities, and use more and more renewable energy. How can these targets be implemented?

Reduce energy demand

Reducing the energy consumption of buildings is a strategy for the improvement of its “passive” energy performance. It directly concerns the thermal envelope of the building. It involves taking measures to insulate the roof, walls, windows and floor to control the amount of energy consumption.

The goals of reducing consumption are to guarantee indoor comfort while controlling the ventilation of spaces to ensure good indoor air quality.

Install equipment with maximum energy efficiency

Energy demand, consumption and performance are linked. Energy consumption corresponds to energy demand divided by the performance of energy systems.

The installation of energy-efficient equipment is the key part of the energy performance improvement strategy. Once the energy demand is reduced, the work consists of using equipment that consumes as little energy as possible.

Using renewable energy to meet energy demand

The use of renewable energies makes it possible to reconcile passive and active strategies. It has the effect of reducing the energy dependence of buildings on conventional sources such as gas or electricity. In addition, it has a positive environmental impact compared to the use of fossil fuels.
